Promoting and Protecting Uniqueness, History, and Beauty

THE CONSORTIUM

Voluntary Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of DOC Wines

The History

Guardian of a unique agricultural practice and volcanic terroir found nowhere else in the world, the Voluntary Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of DOC Wines of the Island of Pantelleria was founded in 1997 at the initiative of the island’s most prominent wine producers.
Its duties include the protection and promotion of the “Pantelleria DOC” designation.
Its role is expressed not only through monitoring compliance with the rules set out in the production regulations, but also through initiatives aimed at promoting the quality and uniqueness of Pantelleria DOC wines — the result of the island’s heroic viticulture — both in Italy and around the world.

The Territory

Among its goals, the Consortium — with a declared commitment to preserving both agricultural and cultural heritage — seeks not only to carry out an in-depth clonal analysis and aromatic profiling of Pantelleria’s Zibibbo grapes, but also to restore the island’s traditional terraced landscapes, where vineyards have thrived for centuries.

Due to its broad representation of the island’s wine production, the Consortium has been granted Erga Omnes status.

The Consortium brings together a diverse group of producers: small and large wineries, local Pantelleria growers who have passed down the bush-trained vine tradition for generations, and major Sicilian wine companies that have chosen to invest in the island.

The Pantelleria DOC Protection Consortium is made up of three types of members: Bottling Members, Winemaking Members, and Grape-Growing Members.

The DOC Regulation

The Production Regulations for wines bearing the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) “Pantelleria” is an official document that sets out the rules and standards to be followed in the production of wine on the island. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and authenticity of wines produced in this specific geographic area.

The statute

The Consortium’s statute is a document that outlines the rules, responsibilities, and organizational structure of the institution. It defines the Consortium’s objectives, the procedures for admitting members, and other key provisions essential for the production and promotion of Pantelleria DOC wines.

The Pantelleria DOC Protection Consortium is made up of three types of members: Bottling Members, Winemaking Members, and Grape-Growing Members.

Viticultural Members

The Viticultural Members are the farmers who cultivate the vineyards and grow the grapes used in wine production. They represent the heart and driving force behind the quality and authenticity of Pantelleria’s wines.
