The Island

Bent el Riah, meaning daughter of the wind in Arabic, is a magical place where a rare harmony has taken shape between human labor and the relentless evolution of nature.
Here, viticulture is recognized as a Heritage of Humanity. Unspoiled landscapes, architectural beauty, exceptional wines, and outstanding local products make Pantelleria the Garden of the Mediterranean.

The Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of DOC Wines of the Island of Pantelleria safeguards and promotes the Pantelleria DOC designation, monitors compliance with the rules established in the production regulations, and raises awareness of the quality and uniqueness of Pantelleria DOC wines—expressions of the island’s heroic viticulture. Thanks to its broad representation, the Consortium has received Erga Omnes recognition.

The Wines

Wine has always been produced on the island and is its most sincere and authentic expression.
The main types established by the DOC production guidelines include Passito and Moscato, Pantelleria Bianco, Frizzante, Moscato Dorato, Moscato Spumante, and Zibibbo Dolce. For each wine category, the regulations define the maximum grape yield per hectare, as well as the maximum yield percentage of fresh grapes into wine and liters of wine per production.

UNESCO

An island of farmers more than fishermen, Pantelleria—through the hard work and dedication of its people—has transformed its complex volcanic landscape into one of the most harmonious agricultural environments in the Mediterranean. In 2014, the agricultural practice of bush-trained Zibibbo vines (vite ad alberello) in Pantelleria was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Consortium was among the key promoters of the nomination.
